America is, without argument, a deeply divided nation over many issues. One has only to look at the results of the last two Presidential elections to see that the divisions are not only deep, but wide as well. There are many divisive topics that, perhaps in decades past would have sparked debate, cause vitriolic expression, anger, and result in a black and white view of the world expressed on both sides of the issue. But, even with the rightward swing of the social and political pendulum, what is just is just, and what is right is right. The truth of our nation is that it preaches equality and practices bigotry and hate. Our national foundation is built upon the idea, at least in word, that all men are created equal, with certain inalienable rights, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness among them. For the first time since the civil rights movement of the 1960s, an entire class of people is being actively discriminated against. They are being legally blocked from enjoying the same rights as other citizens, being barred from employment, and being prevented from living a peaceful co-existence with their neighbors in many communities throughout this nation. These people are not identifiable by any visible characteristic, no race, creed, religion, or gender defines them. Rather, they are simply gay and their rights as human beings are being actively denied them by our broad society.
